T-Systems International GmbH, a global information and communication technology operator, is now working with Wirecard AG to develop internet technology at the point of sale (POS). The aim of the collaboration is to bring the shopping experience into the age of the Internet of Things (IoT).

Wirecard and T-Systems are working in close collaboration to create a joint omnichannel showcase to be exhibited at trade fairs and events which will present the future of shopping through a customer journey: A customer enters a shop and checks in at the entrance using a smartphone or tablet. They go to the shelves where the products are displayed. The user picks up the items they would like to buy. As the shelf is connected to the internet, it recognises the buyer as well as the products they have taken. In line with this, additional personalised digital offers can appear. The customer automatically checks out upon leaving the shop - the payment process has already been completed; the customer can choose either to take the products with them or arrange home delivery.

Dirk Rumler, Vice President Center of Excellence Retail at T-Systems: “Our joint venture with Wirecard is pioneering. As an information and communication technology provider, we are collaborating with partners such as Wirecard because we would like to present the opportunities and advantages of future shopping processes to the retail sector. The Internet of Things will enable consumers to shop in a virtual environment and then receive real objects delivered to their door. We are convinced that merchants must get to grips with the technology now in order to remain competitive in the long term.”

Alexander Hahn, Vice President POS Retail Solutions at Wirecard: “In terms of the payment process itself, it is crucial that it fades into the background: it is all about automated processes which enable a customer to make cross-channel payments seamlessly - no matter where they are - for instance, by using fingerprint recognition technology or to authenticate a password. The technology for the future of shopping is already here.”

T-Systems International GmbH and Wirecard AG already announced their collaboration in April last year. The two companies together hope to support the retail sector with the future-oriented digitisation of payment and purchasing processes. One such solution is Wirecard’s ConnectedPOS platform.
