Apple has announced that with the release of iOS 18.1, developers will soon be able to integrate NFC contactless transactions directly within their iPhone apps using the Secure Element, independent of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet. This new capability, facilitated by the introduction of NFC and Secure Element (SE) APIs, will allow developers to offer a range of contactless services such as in-store payments, digital keys, corporate badges, loyalty cards, and event tickets. Future updates will also support government IDs.

Apple emphasizes that security and privacy remain central to this development. The Secure Element, a certified industry-standard chip, is designed to securely store sensitive data on the device. The new APIs utilize Apple's proprietary technologies, including Secure Enclave and biometric authentication, ensuring a secure transaction process. Users can initiate contactless transactions within an app by either opening the app or setting it as their default contactless app in iOS Settings.

To gain access to these APIs, developers must enter a commercial agreement with Apple, request the necessary entitlements, and comply with industry and regulatory standards. The NFC and SE APIs will initially be available to developers in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, the U.K., and the U.S. through an upcoming developer seed for iOS 18.1, with more regions to follow. Apple Pay and Wallet will continue to provide a seamless, secure, and private experience for users alongside this new feature.
