Businesses have an opportunity to discover the opportunities and challenges as well as benefits of Artificial Intelligence in a free Immersive Tech Session on Monday 6th of July from 10am to 12pm. The session will be hosted by Wo King from Hi9 and Tariq Rashid who leads the Data Science Cornwall community.

Like any powerful technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has ethical considerations as well as benefits. Citizens, businesses and public bodies are increasingly exploring how to understand and address these risks and this session will explore a series of relatable scenarios to provoke a discussion of what can make AI-based services unsafe, unfair and unethical.

Issues that will emerge include poor and biased data quality, algorithmic transparency, tech culture and engineering discipline, explainability, and the more challenging question of corporate ethics.

The session will begin with a newcomer-friendly introduction to machine learning and AI. Once AI has been demystified it will then briefly discuss the inherent limitations and potential biases of machine learning and provide an overview of the emerging global consensus around a framework for understanding and assessing the safe, responsible and ethical use of AI. Participants will then be able to explore why AI can boost business and help make smarter, faster decisions, reduce mistakes and free up more time for more productive tasks.

The session is part of a series of cost-free ‘Immersive Tech Introductions’ for businesses of all sizes, types and sectors. These opportunities have been opened up via Coastal Communities funding gained by the wAVE project, led by Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), Cornwall Museums Partnership and Falmouth University.

Amy Shakespeare, wAVE Community Project Manager at Cornwall Museums Partnership, said: “Immersive technologies are constantly in development and it’s vital Cornish businesses do their bit to stay ahead of the curve. Artificial Intelligence is all about working smarter and more efficiently but it can also raise a plethora of ethical questions that leaders need to ask themselves before diving in. Wo King and Tariq Rashid are absolute experts in this area and we’d really encourage as many as possible to take advantage of their insights in this free session.”

Wo King said, “AI can seem such a scary and unknowable field but I have shown that the basics and the applications can be learnt by anyone. I have helped children create AI applications, worked with farmers to create a practical application for business and hotels to create virtual assistants. We look forward to virtually seeing many new faces on the 6th of July and to answer as many questions as we possibly can about how Artificial Intelligence can help transform your business.”
