The way we make money and spend money is changing.

A few years ago, having a full-time job that provided stability and a consistent income while doing passion projects on the side was a common phenomenon. Arrangements like this provided for the essentials of living and allowed people to do what they love while earning a little extra cash on the side. It was hard to imagine that doing small “gigs” at an hourly rate could become someone’s full-time job. But that seems to be changing as more people are opting to work on a contract to contract basis rather than holding full-time jobs.

In fact, McKinsey reports that 20 to 30 percent of workers in the U.S. and Europe are independent workers. Whether driving for a ride-sharing company, producing a music video for an independent artist or managing accounts for small businesses- these short term gigs give independent workers the flexibility to work when they want and where they want.

So we decided that our first episode of Fortune Favors the Bold—Mastercard’s branded podcast that examines the unique and changing role money plays in our lives— take a closer look at the gig economy and the future of work.

In our first episode produced with Gimlet Creative, host Ashley C. Ford talks to risk-takers like Sharee Collier and her family, who have chosen to prioritize their personal values—like experience and travel—over traditional ideas of stability and ownership. They have chosen a life of adventure in an RV instead of owning a house and having traditional jobs. Modern Nomads also features entrepreneurs, artists and ex-bankers who are working out of co-working spaces like WeWork. And we meet people who find themselves brainstorming with fellow gig economy workers from completely different fields—like the accountant who found himself working alongside a magician.

Whether you consider yourself part of the gig economy or think it’s just a passing trend, Modern Nomads shares how a growing number of independent workers are changing the conventions around jobs and making money.
