The leading Microsoft SQL Server tools vendor, Redgate, has published its latest whitepaper, Data Protection and Compliance During Provisioning, covering the requirements of US legislation Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and how data professional can meet them.

The introduction of the GDPR in Europe this year has encouraged the conversation around data privacy and protection to take the headlines. As a result of the 2018 hot topic, new data protection laws are coming into play and consumers are more aware than ever before of how their privacy can be compromised. New York’s Stop Hacks and Improve Electronic Data Security Act (SHIELD) will come into force in 2019, for example, and will be followed by the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) in 2020.

Although organizations have been working with laws like SOX and HIPAA for years, the GDPR acts as a timely wake-up call for them to reassess exactly how they are protecting personal and sensitive business-critical data.

It has also become an important issue because data has exploded in volume in recent years, and companies are seeking new and innovative ways to extract value from it. With data now stored across different databases, on multiple copies and in various locations, data breaches are increasing in both frequency and size, and the unfortunate misuse of data is now prominent in our news feeds.

In its whitepaper, Redgate breaks down the US legislation for data professionals and discusses how to best comply with the laws without slowing down software delivery or affecting the quality of work. It details how they can continue to draw value from business-critical data, while ensuring the privacy of customer information is protected.

Redgate makes ingeniously simple software used by more than 800,000 IT professionals and is the leading Microsoft SQL Server tools vendor. Redgate's philosophy is to design highly usable, reliable tools which elegantly solve the problems developers and DBAs face every day, and help them to adopt compliant database DevOps. As a result, more than 100,000 companies use products in the Redgate SQL Toolbelt, including 91% of those in the Fortune 100.
