Providing comprehensive insurance cover via smartphones: That’s the business idea behind Heidelberg-based digital insurer Getsafe. Last night, the company was recognised as an outstanding German insurtech with the Fintech Germany Award.

With the Fintech Germany Awards, the financial centre of Frankfurt honours the most promising companies in the fintech, insurtech, blockchain, and artificial intelligence fields. Getsafe was one of eight winners from 220 participants.

In his laudatory speech, Georgios Kargakis, Head of the Agile Development Centre of Allianz Deutschland AG, explained the jury's decision with Getsafe's customer-centric and sustainable business model: Getsafe has made the customers' need for digital security its goal from the very beginning and has consistently pursued this path: "Insurance that should be fun; insurance that everyone understands, for which no file folder is needed, and above all with a completely digital customer experience - that impressed us".

“By winning this award, we are following in some big footsteps. Previous winners like N26, Raisin, Revolut, and solarisBank are role models for us, as they have changed the banking sector forever. Our mission is to make mobile insurance the standard throughout Europe. We’re delighted that our project convinced the jury,” says Christian Wiens, founder and CEO at Getsafe. The company offers a variety of insurances via its app. With just a few clicks, customers can take out insurance, make a claim, and manage their policies on their smartphones.

The award comes at an exciting time in Getsafe’s history. In the last three years, the insurtech transformed from a digital broker into an insurance provider and expanded to the UK at the beginning of 2020. Getsafe wants to position itself as a full-service insurer, and applied for approval from the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) for a property and casualty licence. With its own licence, Getsafe intends to introduce new products and innovations more quickly as well as automating processes for underwriting and claims management.

Christian Wiens explains: “We’ve established ourselves as a digital insurance provider for the millennial demographic. We’re proud of this. But with over 125,000 customers, we are only at the beginning of our journey. Going forward, we want to build on our position as the best-selling insurance company amongst people aged between 20 and 35 and expand to other European markets.”

This was the sixth time that the Founder’s Award was issued in eight categories. A jury of 16 high-profile members compiled a shortlist of 43 companies, including established names like N26, Creditshelf, Finanzguru, Klarna, Moneyfarm, Raisin and Trade Republic. The jurors assessed many aspects, including the business concept, competitive advantages, positioning, financial plans, and management. Frankfurt Main Finance, Techfluence UK and the WM Group/Börsen-Zeitung issue the Founder’s Award.
